About The Practice

Breathing is the one bodily function that is a constant necessity, happens on its own, but can be completely changed and controlled by the conscious mind. When we participate in our breath, we create feedback that changes the signaling of our nervous systems. When we are in the sympathetic, or “fight/flight/freeze” mode of the nervous system, our organs largely get shut off for the time, because the body is counting on this being temporary. When we experience long term stress without relief, we break down.

When we learn to breathe properly, we begin to truly integrate our various layers of existence into our being. We begin to heal.

Opposite the “fight/flight/freeze,” the parasympathetic nervous system’s nickname is “rest and digest,” where our bodies are able to recover as a result of the organ systems returning to normal. Learning to create this relaxation response intentionally is a requirement. Learning to make it the default or “baseline” is a necessity. Our bodies have an innate ability to balance themselves as life creates unbalance. This process, called homeostasis, is never achieved. It is a series of feedback loops that constantly adapt in order to regulate. This is what we are learning to do for ourselves through the breath, motion, and energy work. This is Homeostatic Restoration Therapy.

It’s more than just telling you to “take a deep breath.” Our logo is symbolic of the diaphragm, the muscle responsible for breathing. In this tissue there is no false separation of mind and body, spiritual and physical. We are all one being. Proper use of the diaphragm transforms the entire being, from the nervous system to the musculoskeletal to the cardiovascular to endocrine to the cognitive. You will feel more like yourself, because you will know what you feel like. You will be taught how to be a human in a body, then it’s your job to make it your own.
